At the end of three solid days of Zoom meetings, I was exhausted! The good parts were getting to know, just a little bit, some of the people on my committee; getting to work from home where I could watch the goldfinches on the deck sunflowers; being able to stretch my legs in my own comfortable space. The downside had to do with trying to work with 55-60 other people on Zoom. You could never see more than a few at a time, and although the process was perhaps cleaner online, it also felt less personal. The process was cumbersome–it felt like walking on the sand with all your equipment in a bag tied to one ankle! It included waiting many times for many minutes at a time for a parliamentary ruling. On the other hand, doing things in a way that is consistent and precise was comforting, and made me trust the overall process. It did seem as if everyone was working for the good of all, and our committee was able to work through all the overtures we were assigned. We had some incredible YAADs (Young Adult Advisory Delegates), who were knowledgeable and energetic, and who provided some wonderful rewordings of motions that improved the clarity or broadened the inclusiveness. And the leadership was terrific—good skills AND a great sense of humor! I look forward to meeting these folks in person on Saturday!
