Mt. Washington Presbyterian Church – Director of Music

Position Overview:

The Director of Music and Worship oversees the music life of Mt. Washington Presbyterian Church, with primary responsibility for collaboratively creating meaningful worship. The music program is made up of dedicated volunteers and non-professionals. The hope is that this ministry will continue to grow in musical excellence and spiritual depth.

This position is a part-time, 30 hours a week (three quarter time), exempt employee. Position is eligible for benefits.

Reporting Relationships:

  1. Reports to the Pastor/Head of Staff (HOS)
  2. Serves as staff resource to Celebrate Ministry Team
  3. Oversees and reviews the work of the organist/accompanist
  4. Is a member of the Program Staff

Knowledge, Skills and Qualifications:

  1. Faith Background
  2. Possess and practices a strong Christian faith.
  3. Commitment to support those involved in ministry with Christ-like compassion and hospitality, including embracing diverse populations: LGBTQ+, differing races, differently-abled and economic classes.
  • Musical and Worship Background
  • Possesses a Bachelor of Music degree or equivalent experience.
  • Heart and passion for planning worship services in various modalities (traditional and blended).
  • Proven expertise in long-range worship planning.
  • Competence in programming, rehearsing, and conducting both choral and instrumental music.
  • Experience in leading congregational worship.
  • Mastery of at least one worship-related instrument, i.e., piano, voice, organ.

  • Possess engaging and authentic interpersonal and communication skills.
  • Aptitude for strategic, innovative, and “outside the box” thinking.

Primary Duties and Responsibilities:

  1. Leadership
  2. Provide staff leadership, vision, and support to all music staff and volunteers, including the Celebrate Ministry Team.
  3. Proactively recruit, manage, and appreciate all volunteers, building a strong volunteer leadership team for the program.
  4. Proactively collaborate with the church support and tech staff to facilitate all the music ministries’ administrative, marketing, and logistical components.
  5. Work collaboratively with the Director of Children and Youth to strengthen music ministry to children and youth.
  6. Teach and lead songs/hymns to facilitate vibrant congregational worship.
  • Worship Planning

We plan weekly worship and special services well in advance to provide thematic selections of music to compliment the sermon series theme. We utilize PCO (Planning Center Online) as the primary planning tool. Sermon series and special service themes are developed 2-4 months in advance.

  1. Work with the Pastor on worship flow for the weekly and special services, i.e., Ash Wednesday, Palm Sunday, Good Friday, Easter, Pentecost, World Communion Sunday, and Christmas Eve.
  2. Preview, select and manage all musical elements of the weekly and special worship services at least 3-4 weeks in advance.
  3. Hire outside musicians as needed for special worship services.
  4. Coordinate all technical and logistical elements with the Director of Operations and the support staff.
  • Oversees all Music Ensembles
  • For Celebration Choir, The Grateful Living (Praise Team), and JuBellation (Bells):
    • Manage all aspects of musical preparation, including music selection, rehearsal, and performance in worship.
    • Conduct weekly rehearsals and extra rehearsals for special services when necessary.
  • Church Instrument Maintenance
    • Direct the instrumental maintenance. i.e., piano and organ tunings, repairs, etc.
  • Maintain all Music Libraries – choral, praise, bell, and instrumental
    • Ordering of all music.
    • Maintain music and streaming licenses, i.e., CCLI, ONELICENSE.NET.
    • Work with volunteer music librarians to keep the library in order.
  • In Conjunction with the Celebrate Ministry Team
  • Actively resource the Celebrate Ministry Team in planning, executing, and evaluating all aspects of worship.
  • Collaborate with lay leaders and staff to facilitate musicals, drama, and visual arts in worship.
  • Manage annual music budget.

General Staff Duties:

  1. Participate in weekly worship planning meetings.
  2. Attend all staff meetings (program and all staff) and activities.
  3. Be a caring and collaborative colleague with other staff.

Review Process:

Reviewed annually by the Pastor/Head of Staff following the policies and procedures of the Personnel Committee.
